Obituary

William "Bill" King McElhannon, age 82, of Blue Ridge, GA died Sunday, May 18, 2014. He was born March 4, 1932, in Atlanta to Norris Lee and Cora Lee Hightower McElhannon. Mr. McElhannon was a US Army Korean War veteran. He graduated from Ga Tech in 1959 with a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering (IE) and also received a Master's Degree in IE from Ga Tech in 1967. His 33 years of civilian government service included 2 years with the US Air Force's Atlas missile program in Cape Canaveral, FL; 2 years with the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta; 24 years with the Department of Defense in Atlanta; 5 years with the US Army V Corp in Frankfurt, Germany. After retiring in 1993, he moved to the cabin he built with his family in the 1960's on the Toccoa River near Blue Ridge. He enjoyed coaching youth baseball, weight-lifting, and was an avid Yellow Jackets and Braves fan. Mr. McElhannon was a member of the Blue Ridge UMC, where he served as an usher and member of John Wesley Sunday school class. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends. Mr. McElhannon is survived by his loving wife Marilyn Meeks McElhannon; son, Tim(Cathy) McElhannon, Lexington, VA, son, Steve(Susan) McElhannon, Woodstock, GA; brother, Norris(Linda) McElhannon, Newnan, GA; sister, Mary Ann(Dennis) Bush, Suwanee, GA; stepson, Rob Meeks, Roswell, GA, stepson, Mike Meeks, Ft. Myers, FL; granddaughter, Ashley(Andrew) Wallace, Amelia Island, FL; grandson, Jeff(Brianna) McElhannon, Richmond, VA, grandson, Daniel McElhannon, Charlotte, NC; great grandsons, Jackson and Liam Wallace, Amelia Island, FL. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Blue Ridge United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Burrell officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception in the church social hall immediately following the service. Contributions may be made to the Blue Ridge UMC Capital Campaign, 322 W.
