Walter A. Porter, age 85, of Blue Ridge, GA, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2013 at his home. Mr. Porter was born in Blue Ridge, GA on August 25, 1928 to the late Jim Porter and Margaret Mull Porter. Mr. Porter spent his life in Public Service- serving in Law Enforcement from 1976 to 1992. During that time, Mr. Porter spent 16 years as Sheriff of Fannin County. Mr. Porter was a member of Macedonia Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Helen Marie Porter and was also preceded in death by his 12 siblings.Mr. Porter is survived by his son, Gary Porter of Blue Ridge, GA; daughters, Sherry Porter Jarrard of Ellijay, GA and Tammy Porter Collis of Blue Ridge, GA; grandchildren, Brandon Stepp, Greg Stepp, Jessica Porter Franklin, and Garrison Porter; and great-grandchild, Aubree Franklin.Funeral Services for Mr. Walter A. Porter were held Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. from the Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge with Rev. Mike Collis officiating. Music was provided by Rev. Doug Simonds. Interment followed in Chastain Memorial Park with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Brent Patterson, Jacob Franklin, Johnny Scearce, George Ensley, Mutt Fergeson, and Danny Shinpaugh. Honorary pallbearers include: Tracy Davenport, Todd Pack, Brian Jones, Russell Johnson, Tommy Woody, Larry Franklin, James Callihan, Tony Petty, Sammy Patterson, Gerald Webb, and the men who served as Sherriff's Deputies from 1976 to 1992.
