Obituary

Vickie Lynn (Morton) Sarrell-Schlachter of Copperhill, TN / Blue Ridge, GA peacefully passed away on Friday, May 15, 2015 following a four year courageous battle against breast cancer. She was lovingly surrounded by her husband, mother, sister and children. Vickie turned 62 years old on December 25, 2014. Originally from Atlanta, Vickie had lived in the Fannin County, GA area since 1972. She was preceded in death by her father, Jerry Carson Morton, step-father, John Fain and niece, Sarah Johnson.Vickie graduated in 1970 from Columbia High School in Decatur, GA and earned a BS Nursing degree from Regents College, a RN degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA and practiced nursing for thirty years. Vickie was a natural, compassionate caregiver and helped so many people - family, friends and patients - during her lifetime with difficult situations always putting others needs above her own. Vickie was a dedicated member of St. Catherine of Laboure' Catholic Church of Copperhill, TN for many years. She was instrumental in teaching her children and grandchildren about living a faith-based life and took them to Mass as long as her health permitted. Vickie's joy came from spending time with her family. She loved being the "babysitter" for beloved grandchildren. She never complained about having her home full of family, even during her illness. She was an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed knitting, reading and spiritual growth. Vickie was an amazing friend, sister, daughter, mom, wife, grandmother and caregiver. Survivors include husband, Jack Schlachter of Copperhill, TN; mother, Margaret Fain of Atlanta, GA; daughters, Allison Trotter Hopkins (Eddie) and Carrie Lynn Peel both of Fannin County, GA and Amy Elizabeth Sarrell of Atlanta, GA; son, Leland James "Bro" Sarrell III of Tacoma, WA; granddaughters, Emily and Sarah Bailey, Payten Hopkins, Morgan and Aislinn Peel all of Fannin County, GA; Olivia and Adelaide Sarrell of Tacoma, WA; great-grandson, Brendan James Bailey of Fannin County, GA; sister, Evelyn (Greg) Johnson of Houston, TX; brother, Jim (Deanne) Morton of Atlanta, GA; nieces, Stephanie Morton and Jaimie (Paul) Jaretsky of Atlanta,GA, Adrianna Johnson of Houston, TX; nephew, Chad (Crystal) Adcox of Atlanta, GA; uncle, Aaron Tallent of Maryville, TN; mother-in-law, Mary Schlachter of Orlando, Fl; step- children, John and Jimmie Schlachter of Atlanta, GA, Jill (Frank) Muvdi of Columbia, South America; several great nieces; nephews and friends who loved her.In lieu of flowers Vickie asked that any funds be donated to Divine Mercy of St. Catherine of Laboure Parish Church in Copperhill, TN. A Community service will be held at North Georgia Christian Fellowship church on Highway 5 in Blue Ridge, GA. on Sunday May 24, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.akinsfuneralhome.com.
