Obituary

Roger Glenn Queen, age 65, of Ellijay, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. He was born on April 12, 1958 in Copperhill, Tennessee to Claud Queen, Jr. and Norma Lea Mathis Queen.

Roger was known for his impeccable character, intelligence, integrity, and strength. He was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church. He was a man of faith who was grateful for all of God's blessings, even through the hardships. Roger graduated from Fannin County High School in 1976 as Salutatorian and Star Student. He played his favorite sport, baseball, throughout his high school career. He went on to West Georgia to earn a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and a minor in Mathematics in only three years. He started law school at The University of Tennessee and received his Juris Doctorate in two and a half years. He was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1981. After three years, he became the youngest elected District Attorney in Georgia's history. He went on to serve as the Appalachian Judicial Circuit's District Attorney for 20 years.

Roger loved to deer hunt and fish. While known throughout the community for his extraordinary work ethic and playing ball with his kids, he still found time to laugh at reruns of his favorite show, Andy Griffith. He was an avid sports fan and loved the Atlanta Braves, but his favorite team was the Gilmer Bobcats, because he loved to cheer for his kids in multiple sports throughout the years.

On March 18, 2003, Roger fell down a flight of stairs at the Gilmer County Courthouse which resulted in him becoming a ventilator-dependent quadriplegic. Over the almost 21 years that he was paralyzed, Roger overcame many physical challenges with determination that was unmatched.

Roger was a man that loved his family immensely. He married the love of his life, Debbie, on July 7, 1984. You would hear him often say that his family was his greatest accomplishment. They were truly his pride and joy. His legacy will live on through his children and grandchildren. He was a special husband, Dad, and Granddaddy and he will be deeply missed.

He is preceded in death by his father, Claud Queen, Jr.; brother-in-law, Ken Andrews; sisters-in-law, Lola Mae Pelfrey and Mary Lou Millsaps; and mother-in-law, Myrtle Millsaps Ash.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Debbie Queen of the home; children, Julie (Travis) Greene of Ellijay, GA, Chase Glenn (Amanda) Queen of Ellijay, GA, and Tyler Roger Queen of Augusta, GA; grandchildren, Millie Greene, Libbie Greene, Taylee Queen, Collins Queen, and Cruise Queen; mother, Norma Lea Queen of Blue Ridge, GA; siblings, Mildred (James) Johnson of Blue Ridge, GA and Raymond Queen of Blue Ridge, GA; sisters-in-laws: JoAnn Andrews, Linda (Bob) Buchanan and Jan Millsaps; brothers-in-law: Donnie Pelfrey, Bobby (Polly) Millsaps, and Tommy (Wanda) Millsaps; several nephews, nieces, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

The family would like to express immense gratitude to all of the special nurses and caregivers of Roger over the past 21 years. We are incredibly grateful and blessed for your dedication. We consider you a part of our family.
