Mr. Richard Wolford Matthews, age 68, of McCaysville passed away Monday, July 9, 2007 in the LifeCare Center in Ducktown, TN. Born in Fannin County, he was the son of the late Charles Hugh Matthews and Hilda Rosemond Nari Matthews. Mr. Matthews worked as an engineer designing submarines. He was a member of Friendship #3 Baptist Church and a United States Navy veteran. He was also an avid golfer.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Margaret Addison Matthews of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Lisa Matthews of Blue Ridge; daughter and son-in-law, Shelley and Jimmy Allen of McCaysville; brother, Tony Matthews of Lake Mary, FL; and four grandchildren, Brandon Nicholson, Briana Nicholson, Bryce Nicholson, and Kristin Towe.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, July 12, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. from the Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge Chapel with Rev. Daniel Postell, Rev. Garry Barber, and Rev. Kenny Housley officiating. Music was by Jimmy Allen. Pallbearers were Jack Stepp, Joe Stepp, Jerry Stepp, Jon Stepp, Ricky Addison, and James Addison. Honorary pallbearers will be Josh Addison, Ricky Nari, Doug Gobble, Hugh Ware, Tommy Ware, Robert Arp, Bill Rymer, Bob Welch, Alan Chancey, Billy Wayne Chastain, Phillip Talley, and Jim Matthews. Interment followed in Copper Ridge Memory Garden. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friendship #3 Baptist Bible Fund P.O. Box 246 Epworth, GA 30541.
