Obituary

Reid Harold Mathis, age 92, of Blue Ridge, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at his home. He was born on March 30, 1931 in Mineral Bluff, Georgia to the late William Robert Mathis and Atha Key Mathis.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grand father.

In 1966, Reid bought the farm that was owned by his parents which was established in 1879. As Reid began his family, he worked for a dry cleaning service for several years. He also worked as a dairy farmer for 29 years, delivering milk within the community.

Reid served 4 years as the Fannin County Tax Receiver. He also served a number of years on the Blue Ridge City Council.

In 1973, he opened Mathis Feed and Seed and for 18 years he served the community and made many friendships along the way. During this time, he also was a poultry farmer. Reid never met a stranger and had a smile for everyone. He loved to make people laugh and help others by being generous.

Reid was a Master Mason member of Blue Ridge Lodge #67 F&AM. He received his 50 year apron in June of 2022.

Reid was a devoted, lifelong member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and served as a deacon in later years.

If he wasn't at church, you could find him visiting others as he enjoyed sharing stories of the past. He was an honorary visitor of Akins-Cobb Funerals & Cremations.

Our daddy lived a wonderful life, with many family and friends that surrounded him in his last few days. The family would like to thank the staff of Compassus in Ellijay, Ga for their love and continued support and amazing care of our daddy. We are forever grateful for having them with us in these last few days. Thank you to all who visited, sent messages, brought food and prayed for us through this time.

Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Bill Mathis, Earl Mathis, Vernon Mathis, Lillian Grizzle, Reece Mathis, Ed Mathis, and J.R. Mathis.

He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Louise Newman Mathis of the home; children, Barbara Chancey (Joe) of Blue Ridge, GA, Steve Mathis (Pam) of Blue Ridge, GA, Robby Mathis (Pam) of Mineral Bluff, GA, and Kristi Mathis of Blue Ridge, GA; sister, Reathel Parks of Maryland, DC; grandchildren, Little Joe Chancey (Courtney Woody), Chad Mathis (Lisa Taylor), Matt Chancey (Erin), Candace Welch (Derrick), Kelly Mathis, Kacey Davis (Will), Destiny Weeks, and A.J. Weeks; great-grandchildren, Colton Mathis, Morgan Chancey, Ryan Chancey, and Reed Welch; numerous other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, February 9, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. from the Akins-Cobb Blue Ridge Chapel with Rev. Michael Pope, Rev. Claude Mathis, and Rev. Wallace Parks officiating. Music will be led by the Sugar Creek Quartet. Masonic Rites will be rendered by the Blue Ridge Lodge #67F&AM. Interment will follow in the Chastain Memorial Park with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Joe Chancey, Chad Mathis, Matt Chancey, Colton Mathis, A.J. Weeks, Will Davis, Derrick Welch, and Tony Grizzle. Friends may visit at the funeral home after 9:00 a.m. on Friday, February 9, 2024, but the family will especially visit with friends between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church care of Danny McFarland at 2711 Ada Street, Blue Ridge, GA 30513.
