Mary Sharp was born Mary Jean Adams on June 10th, 1948 in Aho, Arizona to Tommy and Ruby Adams. Early in her life, her parents moved back to McCaysville upon request of her Uncle Rocky. Her parents instilled in her the love of God and raised her in McCaysville First Baptist Church. She graduated from West Fannin High School in 1966, and took classes at Young Harris College.
She married and took the name Sharp in 1967, which she would keep throughout the rest of her life. Mary would live in New Jersey, Atlanta, and Myrtle Beach while married, but returned to Epworth after her divorce. She was known as Mary to the circle of her friends. During this time, she was a long time member of Epworth First Baptist Church where she made countless, lifelong friends.
She was known by one more name and it defined her, Mom. Mary's primary reason for returning to Epworth was to raise her two sons, Rocky (Leland Parrish) and Joe Reid. She fought hard to make a life for her boys. She never missed a sports game, band concert, or most practices; sometimes even driving across multiple counties to be with one son or the other. She was fiercely defensive of her boys. She held them together through broken bones and broken hearts.
Her ex-husband was remarried to Cora Sharp, who became fast friends with Mary who would call each other "wife-in-law." Cora would have two children Savannah Leigh and Jacob Duncan, who would give her the name, "Mary-Mom." She would be called this by a generation of kids who grew up knowing Mary-mom's love and support. She adored children and always would find a smile and laugh in everyone she met.
Rocky would eventually marry Terri Workman, who Mary welcomed in with open arms. Mary would become a grandmother to their daughter, Sera Fox Sharp; who she would spoil to levels far exceeding even her boys.
Mary would be diagnosed with cancer in 2020 and would fight it into remission and would still be strong enough to hold her family together through hard times. In 2025, she received the news that the cancer has resurfaced. She was visited many times by friends and family in her final days. Mary passed away peacefully on March 29th, 2026; surrounded by her sons and family.
Memorial services to honor Mary's life will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. from the Akins-Cobb Blue Ridge Chapel with Rev. Dr. Tom Jordan and Rev. Monica Ledford officiating. The family will visit with friends prior to the service beginning at 4:00 p.m. until the service hour of 5:00 p.m.
