Obituary

Marvin Duane Courtney, age 80, of Rensselaer, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 19, 2012 at the Rensselaer Care Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Wayne County, Michigan on July 30, 1931, the son of Charles Irvin and Viola Mae (Post) Courtney. Marvin attended school in Wayne County and went on to serve his Country in the Korean War from 1948 - 1952. On April 19, 1954, in Blue Ridge, GA, he married Opal Pearl (Henson) Courtney. She preceded him in death on March 24, 1992. Marvin worked in the automotive industry for the ThyssenKrupp Budd Co. for 40 years. He had been a resident of Jasper County since 1972. He was a member of the Hebron Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and auto repair. Marvin is survived by two daughters, Diania Courtney and Patricia Courtney, both of Portage; four sons, Ronald (wife Patricia) Courtney of Wheatfield, Timothy (companion Peggy) Courtney of Wolcott, Charles Courtney of Rensselaer, and Melvin Courtney (wife Sonya) of Winamac; two brothers, Irvin "Junior" Courtney and Donald (wife Beverly) Courtney of Michigan; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a son, Curtis Courtney. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, July 22, 2012 from 2 p.m. until time of services at 4 p.m. at the Open Bible Baptist Church, 722 N. Summer St. in Rensselaer, Pastor Lester Burkey, Pastor Gary Reed and Pastor Robert Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends at New Liberty Baptist Church in Mineral Bluff, GA on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the New Liberty Church Cemetery with military honors by North Georgia Honor Guard. Donations in Marvin's memory are suggested to the family. .
