Obituary

Luba Alexandrovnov Moschajev Wiessner, Blue Ridge artist, passed away peacefully September 7, 2015 at the Soddy-Daisy Healthcare Center. She was born September 30, 1926 in Odessa, Ukraine on the Black Sea and had lived in Blue Ridge since the 1970's. She was fond of saying that the name her mother gave her was the most beautiful word in the Russian language, for "Luba" means "love," and she loved beauty and saw something beautiful in every person.Words are not adequate to describe the spirit of this fiercely independent, generous, fun-loving woman who endured so much in her lifetime. Her paintings - of mountains, lakes, the sea, wildlife and the Russian landscapes she left so long ago -attest to her determination to create what was beautiful in a world where she had seen first-hand so much hatred and suffering. At the age of 16, Luba fled from Odessa when the city had fallen to the Germans and Romanians during World War II. She landed in Germany and served as a rescue nurse in Koblenz, which was bombed repeatedly during the war. While bringing others to safety, she was seriously injured by an exploding bomb. Afraid that she might be paralyzed, she started concentrating on painting, thinking she could earn a livelihood from painting if she never walked again.Luba painted her whole life until her hands were no longer able to hold a brush. Her oil paintings grace the homes of many in Fannin County and are in 40 states and 15 foreign countries. She has won many accolades in art shows.During the war she met her husband, Robert Wiessner, a medic with the U.S. Army in Germany, and she came with him to the United States and became an American citizen. Robert Wiessner, who died in 1998, also served in the Korean War and Vietnam War. Luba was very proud of her husband's military service. She said it was her sense of humor and God that helped her survive under Stalin and Hitler. That was what kept her alive through all the bombings and hunger and sickness. "Good-hearted crazy," was how she described herself. Luba could not bear to see animals or other human beings suffer. She was always thankful for everything people did for her.Luba is survived by her daughter, Rosemarie Dency, and son-in-law Gary Dency of Shrewsbury, MA, grandson Eric Dency and his wife, Lisa, of Glastonbury, CT, grandson Matthew Dency and his wife, Tania of Leicester, MA and great-grandchildren Amanda, Christopher, Andrew, Emma, Lucas and Cohan Dency. Luba leaves behind many who loved her in Blue Ridge, including friends Marianne Jourdan, Linda Davis, Soul Sister Cynthia Maude, Cherri Fustino and Mina Mayab.Luba's family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to Humane Society of Blue Ridge, 171 Mineral Springs Road, Blue Ridge, GA 30513.Luba's family would like to express a special thank you to all of the staff at Soddy-Daisy Healthcare Center and Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate care during the last few months. Graveside services will be held Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. from Chastain Memorial Park with Father Tom Moser officiating.
