The Akins Funeral Home of Copperhill announces funeral services for Mrs. Bernice Brooks, age 84, of Ducktown, TN who passed away on Monday February 16, 2009 in the Life Care Center. Born in Englewood, TN she was the daughter of the late Bruce and Gertie Aldridge Newman. She was an active member of the McCaysville Church Christ. She loved to quilt, fishing and enjoyed gardening. Mrs. Brooks worked for a number of years as a Licensed Practical Nurse and owned a Quilt and Fabric Shop. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Flavil Brooks; brothers, Thomas, James, William, Donald and Carl Newman; sisters, Natalie Chambers, Aileen Daniel, Edith Newman, Imogene Newman and Elizabeth Newman.Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Debbie Brooks of Selmar, TN; daughters and son-in-law, Gayle and Marty Galloway of Epworth, GA, and Andrea and Mark Honeycutt of Jolton, TN; brothers, Kenneth Newman of Calhoun, TN, Bob Newman and Jerry Newman both of Los Angles, CA and W.C. Newman; sister, Thelma Lee Black of St. Charles, Mo.; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren also survive.Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday February 19, at 8:00 p.m. from the Chapel of the Akins Funeral Home with Min. Bill Johnston and Min. Keith Ritchie officiating. Congregational music will be led by Mr. Bob Mills. The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers: Monty Galloway, Don Dilbeck, Bob Loudermilk, Jerry Williams, Harold Ross, and Ken Johnson. Interment will follow on Friday, February 20 at 11:00 a.m. in the Church of Christ Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. until the funeral hour.
