On Wednesday, November 30, 2022, Katie Powers Gilbert passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family.

Katie was born on February 26, 1943 in Brasstown, GA. She graduated from Hayesville High School in Hayesville, NC, where she served as Vice-President of her Senior class. She helped organize countless class reunions where she enjoyed seeing her classmates over the years. She attended Young Harris College for two years and graduated from Mars Hill College with a BA in Music, Piano emphasis. She went on to receive a Master of Church Music from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, where she met her husband, Harry.

Katie grew up in a musical family and has always had a deep love of music. She took piano lessons as a child and began teaching piano lessons to others as a teenager. She maintained private piano and voice studios everywhere she lived (NC, KY, IN, AL, TN, GA). Katie was also on the voice faculties at Huntingdon College (Montgomery, AL), Lee University (Cleveland, TN), and Young Harris College (Young Harris, GA), and taught music at Whitfield Kindergarten and The Montgomery Academy, both in Montgomery, AL.

Along with her deep love of music, Katie loved the Lord her God with all her heart, soul, mind, and strength. She yearned to have a deeper understanding of scripture and God's love, and led numerous Bible studies through the years. She completed every Beth Moore Bible study at least once and always found new truths each time. She was also an avid reader and was never not in the middle of a book.

Katie is survived by her husband of 50 years, Harry Gilbert, her son Eric (Shea) Gilbert, her daughter Stephanie Gilbert, her four grandchildren, Emma, Audrey, Caleb, and Eli Gilbert, and her sister, Cheryl Powers. She is also survived by many cousins who were like siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Jessie Powers.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, December 3, 2022, 3:00p, at McConnell Memorial Baptist Church in Hiawassee, GA, with visitation beginning at 2:00 pm. Katie will be interred at Shady Grove Baptist Church cemetery, Hayesville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas offering or Platelet Disorder Support Association.
