Obituary

June Thomas peacefully went to meet our Lord on Saturday, April 6, 2024, surrounded by her family.

June was preceded in death by her husband, John S. Thomas; her sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Marvin Godfrey of McCaysville, GA.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Debbie, of Rocky Mount, NC; her grandsons Bryan (Kimberly) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Erik (Kelci) of Raleigh, NC; her great-grandsons, Brooks, Brody and Baylor (Bryan and Kimberly); her great-granddaughter, Sarah (Erik and Kelci); and her five nieces and nephews, all living in GA.

June was born in McCaysville, GA on February 25, 1934, to Cecil and Willa Mae Thomas. She was raised with her older sister Betty, in a solid Christian home, with strong and abiding faith that would shape the rest of her life. Her father, Cecil, not only raised his daughters right, but also brought both his sons-in-law to know the Lord!

June played basketball and graduated as Salutatorian from McCaysville High School in 1951. After graduation, she attended Southern Business College in Atlanta to prepare for a career in business, a rarity in the early 1950's. While in school, June met and was married to the love of her life, John, on September 26, 1952. She then went on to work at AT&T for four years, leaving the business world to raise their son in 1955.

The Thomas family moved with some regularity due to John's rapid rise in the trucking industry. No matter the move, June was a supportive partner, coordinating the packing and unloading, the unsung hero in John's success. Once settled in a new location, June always led the family to join a local church, becoming involved in the life of the church. She remained a north Georgia girl through and through, always travelling back home for Holidays to spend time with her family.

June enjoyed bowling, and joined both women and mixed leagues, with John, wherever they moved. The family always had a boat, skiing and fishing on Blue Ridge Lake, Lake Sinclair, Smith Mountain Lake, and even the occasional trip to Panama City, FL was always a joy to her. She also loved traveling, and she was lucky enough to join John on business trips and conventions, connecting with friends and seeing new places.

A Graveside Service will be officiated by her nephew, Reverend Marty Godfrey, to be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at 10:30 AM at Copper Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Akins-Cobb Funerals & Cremations of Blue Ridge, GA is in charge of local arrangements.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.akinscobb.com
