Mr. John Kenneth Walker, Sr., of Mineral Bluff, GA, age 89, passed away on March 31, 2013. John was born in Marble, NC on June 25, 1923. He was the oldest of nine children born to the late John and Minnie Ellis Walker. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Franklin Walker; brothers, George, Edward "Bo", Randall, Raymond "Gene" and Roger Walker; sister, Lena Faye Ross. He was a member of the Ellis family which was one of the pioneer families of Fannin County. Mr. Walker proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Army in North Africa and the Persian Gulf Command and also during the Korean War in the United States Air Force. John worked in civil defense and, as a Fannin County Deputy Sherriff and also drove a bus for seven years for the Fannin County School System. He had worked and retired as a Maintenance Mechanic for Broyhill Furniture. Survivors include five sons, Leonard Walker of Morganton, GA, Larry and wife Vicky Walker of Cumming, GA, John K. and wife Ginger, David Kyle Walker, and Kevin and wife Tanna Walker all of Mineral Bluff, GA; one daughter, Marlene Walker Godfrey of Mineral Bluff, GA; sisters, Virginia Towe of Ball Ground, GA and Connie Walker of FL; seventeen grandchildren, thirty two great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.Funeral services were conducted on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Robert Fancher, Pastor Valentin Rusu and the Rev. Roy Clore officiating. Interment followed in the Walker Family Cemetery with full military honors provided by the North Georgia Honor Guard. Pallbearers were Mitchell Godfrey, Corey Godfrey, Colin Walker, Adam Walker, Josh Walker, Jeb Walker, and Wesley Walker. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.akinsfuneralhome.com.
