Mr. Jerry Newman, age 74, of Chatsworth, GA formerly of McCaysville, GA passed away on June 5, 2010. He was born March 31, 1936 in Culberson, NC to the late Hattie Standridge and Thomas Lloyd Newman, one of five children. After graduation from high School, Mr. Newman enlisted in the United States Army in October of 1958. He served his country for twenty years and was a Vietnam Combat Veteran. In 1958 he married Jessie Greer Newman and after retirement from the military in 1978 they settled in Columbus, GA and worked Civil Service and retired from there in 1993. Mr. and Mrs. Newman have lived throughout the state of Georgia but mostly recently in Chatsworth. Mr. Newman had a good sense of humor and loved teasing people. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of the First Assembly of God, Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife, Jessie Greer Newman of Chatsworth, GA; two children, Deborah Snyder and husband Martin of Milford, KS and Ronald Newman and wife Lesa of LaGrange, GA; four grandchildren, Jeremy Snyder and Family, Amanda Williams and Husband Russell, Candace Newman and Heather Snyder; one great grandchild, Grace Noelle Snyder; and several nieces and nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Greer and Rev. David Greer officiating. Music was provided by Rev. Jerry and Edna Greer and Alita Kinard. Interment followed in the Hopewell Cemetery in Cherokee County, NC. Serving as pallbearers were the United States Army Honor Guard, Kevin Greer, Jeremy Greer, Jeremy Snyder, Jackie Cochran, Terry Newman, Steve Newman and Terry Dills. Serving as honorary pallbearers were: David Greer, Jimmy Dills, Rocky Dills, Nathan and Olin Greer. Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge, GA was in charge of arrangements. .
