James Robert "Rabbit" Hughes, age 82 of McCaysville, GA passed away on Friday, December 29, 2023 in Dalton, GA surrounded by his family. He was born on March 6, 1941 in Blue Ridge, GA to the late Homer Hughes and Ellie Parris Hughes. Rabbit had worked at Tennessee Copper Company as an acid loader. He served in the United States Army with the 82nd Airborne. Rabbit marched during the inauguration ceremony for President John Kennedy. His favorite job was being called Pappy and he loved his family. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and canning the vegetables. The many things he enjoyed required hardwork but he loved it. Rabbit was the owner of Mobile Trading Post. He loved his Savior and was a Godly man.

Survivors are his wife of sixty-four years, Geraldine Davis Hughes "Mammy" of McCaysville, GA; children, Bobby and Shawn Hughes of Dalton, GA, Barry Hughes of McCaysville, GA and Sandi and Robert Graham of McCaysville, GA; grandchildren, Jessica Hughes, Jamie and Monnie Hughes, Caitlin and Josh Snider, Carrie and Philip Stout, Jake Hughes, Clay and Gracie Hughes and Cassidy Graham; great-grandchildren, Sarah Hughes, James Robert Hughes, IV, Nate Hughes, Hadlee Ann Hughes, Maddie Hughes, Leah Hughes, Luke Snider, Bonnie Snider, Will Snider, Lena Kate Stout and Linley Stout; siblings, Mary Chancey of Ellijay, GA, Linda Goddard of McCaysville, GA, Brenda Whaley Hughes of Morganton, GA, Betty and Jim Burnette of Blue Ridge, GA, Thomas and Melissa Hughes of Athens, TN, William and Lois Hughes of Blue Ridge, GA and Johnny and Angie Hughes of Blue Ridge, GA; special aunt, Evelyn Hunter of Blue Ridge, GA and special brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Jimmy Davis of McCaysville, GA and Joe and Ruth Davis of Deer Park, TX.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. from the Akins-Cobb Funerals & Cremations of Blue Ridge Chapel with Rev. Dan Hocker officiating. Eulogy will be by Jamie Hughes. Music will be by Cassidy Graham. Military Honors will be provided by the North Georgia Honor Guard. Interment will follow in the Crestlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jamie Hughes, Jake Hughes, Clay Hughes, Josh Snider, Philip Stout and Jesse Godsey. Honorary Pallbearers will be Rev. Sammy Ledford, Ken Caldwell, Glenn Hughes, Max Housley, Leo Passey Terry Ross, Danny Patterson and Donald Stewart.
