Obituary

James Edward Payne, age 82, of Turtletown, TN passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2017 in the CHI Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, TN following a brief illness. James was a native of the Copper Basin area and was the son of the late Carl and Mary Glynn Cole Payne. He was a member of the Farner Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and as treasurer. He was a member of the Ruritan Club and enjoyed golfing as a hobby. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and had worked and retired from TVA and also the Cities Service Company.He is survived by his loving wife of over fifty seven years, Carolyn Gaddis Payne of the home; children, James Edward Payne, Jr and Susan Denise Payne, both of Chattanooga, TN; sister-in-law, Shirley (Johnny) Thompson of Luling, LA; niece Carol Thompson Young of Ft. Worth, TX; nephew Doug Thompson of Luling LA; step-sisters Janice Sutton of Bryson City, NC, Judy Estes of Rockledge, FL; several cousins and many other relatives and friends.Funeral services were conducted Sunday, July 16, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. from the Akins of Copperhill Chapel with Minister Keith Williamson and Rev. Ray Harper. A Eulogy was provided by Jim Parmer. Music was by Linda Ledford. Pallbearers included Leroy Taylor, Herb Clark, Leslie Nicholson, Gary Nicholson, Keith Kilpatrick, Scott Barker, Douglas Thompson and Kenneth Cole. Honorary pallbearers included Leon Boring, Roger Hampton, John Bruschi, Robert Coffey, Doug Dilbeck, Ben Johnson, Don Kimsey, Reid Blackwell, David Blackwell and the Gentlemen at the Farner Presbyterian Church. Interment followed in the Zion Hill Baptist Church cemetery.
