James W. Burger, age 76, of McCaysville, passed away at Copper Basin Medical Center on Monday, August 12, 2013 following a brief bout with cancer.James was born in Turtletown, TN on November 2, 1936. He was the son of the late Manuel and Belvie Jones Burger. He was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey Lynn Burger and first wife Sara Mae McGee Burger, as well as brothers Ralph, Harvey, Wayne and Homer Burger.He is survived by his beloved wife Virginia, "Gin", and three children and their spouses, Melinda (Steve) Phillips of Blue Ridge, GA, Jimmy (Tammy) Burger of Alamo, GA, DeEtta (Jay) Brooks of Newnan, GA and step-daughter Michele Watson of McCaysville, GA. Eight grandchildren Amanda and Larry Sisson, Andrew Burger, Tiffany and Michael Messer, Justin Burger, Caleb and Tera Phillips, Carrie Phillips, Natalie Vicknair and Jessica Burger, as well as 3 great-grandchildren Emily Sisson, Micah Messer, Malachia Burger, a sister Mary Burger of Benton, TN and many nieces and nephews.James lived in the Kingtown area of McCaysville for over 50 years. He coached both baseball and softball to area youth for many years. He also enjoyed hunting and many other outdoor sports. He was well known for raising and training beagles for rabbit hunting, as well as being an avid Braves and Falcons fan. He was an active member of Helping Hand Fellowship Church.Funeral services were conducted by Pastor Denny Hawkins of Helping Hand Fellowship Church and Pastor Junior Burger of Benton, TN. Special music was presented by The Barker Brothers, the Helping Hand Fellowship Church Choir and Althea Davenport. Interment followed in Copper Ridge Memorial Gardens on Thursday, August 15, 2013Pallbearers were Fritz Baugh, Jay Brooks, Junior Burger, Greg Panter, Steve Phillips and Larry Sisson.
