Obituary

Irvin LaFleur, age 74 of Canton, Georgia, sadly passed on July 5, 2023. He was born on November 28, 1948, in Elton, Louisiana to the late Batson LaFleur and the late Bessie Sloane LaFleur. The youngest of seven children, Irv graduated from Elton High School and McNeese State University, where he participated in ROTC. Following college, he accepted a commission in the United States Army. A member of the Signal Corp, Irv served in Korea, Germany, and Saudi Arabia as well as Fort Huchuca, Fort Gordon, and Fort Bragg. In 1979, while stationed in Hanau, Germany, Irv met Julia Alice Doss, a Department of Defense teacher originally from Georgia. The two were married on October 10, 1981. Their son Thomas was born while they were stationed at Fort Gordon and their son Michael was born while they were stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. He retired after twenty years of service at the rank of Major.

Irv had earned a Masters Degree in Computer Science from Florida State University while on active duty and after service with the Army embarked on a second career as a teacher. He taught computer proficiency at the elementary and middle school level in both in Raeford, North Carolina and Cumming, Georgia. At Lanier Technical College he instructed adults in introduction courses on computer skills. Irv had his second retirement after another 19 years of service.

Irv was passionate about photography and took great pride in the landscaping of his lawn. He was also skilled in woodworking and would regularly build projects for his friends and family. He traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe, enjoying learning of the history and culture of various areas. The fall found him enjoying the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Falcons, and in the spring and summer he loved the Atlanta Braves. Irv was a member of the Cumming United Methodist Church and greatly enjoyed his Sunday School class, Faithful Fellowship.

Irv was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Hilda LaFleur Cart, Leola LaFleur, and Elaine LaFleur Martindale. Irv is survived by his wife Alice Doss LaFleur, son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Rachel LaFleur of Baltimore, Maryland; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Lauren LaFleur and grandsons Oliver and Nolan LaFleur of Roswell, Georgia, sisters Louella (Homer) Day and Linda (Jimmy) Richard, brother Lloyd (Rita) LaFleur, as well as nephew and cousin, who were raised as brothers, Bert (Cindy) Cart and Ronnie (Roxie) Daigle; brother in law Harry (Lynn) Doss; numerous nieces and nephews.

Military honors will accompany a graveside service at the Pinecrest Cemetery in Vidalia, Georgia, on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at 1:00 PM with the Rev.
