The Akins Funeral Home of Copperhill announces the death of Mrs. Gabrilla Starr Payne Chastain, age 99, of Murphy, NC who passed away Sunday, September 7, 2008 at Life Care Center of Copper Basin in Ducktown, TN. Born in Polk County, TN she was the daughter of the late Pledger and Clementine Witherow Payne. She was a homemaker, a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and a member of Josephine Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Chastain was preceded in death by her husband, E.R. "Ed" Chastain; son, Hobert Chastain; daughter, Joyce Shearer; brothers, Howard Payne, Harley Edward "Buster" Payne, Bob Payne and Hiram Payne; and sister, Myrtle Caylor.She is survived by a sister, Inez Newman of Murphy, NC; four grandchildren, Janet Almodovar, Steven Shearer, Mitchel Shearer and Debbie Shelver; many nieces and nephews also survive.Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church at Wolf Creek with Rev. G.W. Mathis officiating. Mrs. Chastain will lie in state at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the funeral hour. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Music will be by Maylee Ledford, Rosie Jones and Susie Arp. Pallbearers will be Charles Payne, Randall Payne, Paul Newman, Tommy Carter, Dale Bryant and David Newman.
