Obituary

Fredie Chastain, Jr., age 75, of Ellijay, GA passed away on Friday, October 24, 2025 at his home following an extended illness.

Born in McCaysville, GA he was the son of the late Fred and Mary Ruth Taylor Chastain. Fredie was proud of serving his country with the United States Marine Corps where he was honorably discharged attaining the rank of Corporal. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying both hunting and fishing. In his younger years he played several sports but his favorite was basketball. Later, he served as a coach for the youth of Fannin County coaching basket ball for a number of ears. Fredie enjoyed building motors and working on performance cars. He retired from Sisson Dupont Carder after many years of employment.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard Lloyd Chastain; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Sylvester and Thelma Watkins; brother-in-law, James Walter "J.W." Watkins; and niece, Becky Maddich.

Survivors include his loving wife of 51 years, Betty Watkins Chastain; daughters and son-in-law, Ginger Chastain of Ellijay, GA and Tracey and James "Jimbo" Dunn of Hiram, GA; grandchildren, Dakota Bailey and Cloey Bailey both of Hiram, GA and Austin Mull of Ellijay, GA; sister, Susie Greenwood of Waynesburg, PA; niece and nephew, Mary Ann Lewis and Craig Greenwood; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Joey Watkins of Ellijay, GA, Vernell and Rob Neuwar of Ellijay, GA, Susan Brown of Ellijay, GA, Linda and Charles Ballew of Blue Ridge, GA; and many other nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. from the Akins-Cobb Blue Ridge Chapel with Rev. Phillip Davenport, Jr. officiating. Interment followed in the Young's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery with military honors provided by Marine Corps League Lake Blue Ridge Detachment # 1438. Dakota Bailey, Austin Mull, Jimbo Dunn, Rob Neuwar, Kevin Watkins, and Nehemiah Watkins served as pallbearers. The family visited with friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
