Douglas was born to Bernard and Marion Nuelle in St. Louis, MO on December 17th, 1947. He graduated from Southwest High School in 1966 before attending the University of Missouri in St. Louis and receiving a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry as well as graduating summa cum laude. In 2002, he was awarded with the Distinguished Alumni Award from University of Missouri. Doug attended the School of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri from September, 1969, to June, 1973, where he was awarded his Doctorate of Medicine degree. For his orthopedic residency, Doug attended the Campbell Clinic in Memphis, TN from 1976 until 1979.

Douglas served as a Lieutenant in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy from July 1974 through June 1976. He was stationed on board the U.S.S. Proteus AS-19, a nuclear submarine tender in Guam. His duties included running the hyperbaric oxygen chamber for all of Micronesia.

Douglas had a private Orthopedic practice in Port Charlotte, FL for 20 years before moving to Blue Ridge, GA and starting Blue Ridge Orthopedics, another private orthopedic practice which has flourished ever since.

Over the years, Doug has enjoyed a number of hobbies and activities. He enjoyed playing multiple musical instruments, some of which include banjo, guitar, bass, and piano. He loved sailing on the open ocean, traveling around the world, and creating small scale ship models. He regularly made trips to visit family and friends and never failed to come home with a new story and adventure to share.

Douglas is survived by his two children Dylan Douglas Nuelle and Rebecca Diane Norman; two grandchildren, Caroline and William; his sister, Bernadine, and cousin Margaret.
