Dorothy Lounett Rodgers Garrett, age 94, went home to be with the Lord on July 31, 2026.
Dorothy was born on March 23, 1932 and grew up in Decatur, GA. She attended South DeKalb High School. Later, Dorothy married Ulysses Sanford "Buddy" Garrett. They were married on January 29, 1949. She worked several years at PineTree, a carpet and yarn manufacturing facility in Dahlonega, GA. She also worked as a seamstress at Levi Strauss in Blue Ridge for almost 20 years. Her talent as a seamstress allowed her to make many of her children's clothes. As they grew up, she altered them as they were handed down to the next sibling. When Buddy and Dorothy moved to Fannin County in the late 50's, they worked their farm and raised many different crops with their children.
Dorothy was a member of Salem #1 (Sugar Hill) Baptist Church where she taught Pre-school and Primary Sunday School classes for many years. She loved baking pies (especially pecan and sweet potato pies) for her sons and cakes (particularly coconut), for Donna and Pam's birthdays.
Dorothy enthusiastically watched the Atlanta Braves. She loved the outdoors, singing in the church choir and spending time with her family and church family. Dorothy enjoyed trips like when she joined Peggy, Horace, Larry and Judy in Pigeon Forge, TN and created many special memories. She particularly enjoyed her trip to Colorado where her brother, Harold, the pilot took her on an airplane ride over the Colorado Mountains.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Paul J. and Lounett Martin Rodgers; husband, Ulysses Sanford "Buddy" Garrett; a daughter, Donna (Kenneth) Bowers; sisters, Katherine Peggy (Horace) Hillard and Barbara A. Rodgers; and brothers, Harold Rodgers and David Rodgers.
She is survived by her children, Larry (Susan) Garrett of Mineral Bluff, GA, Roy Garrett of Dial, GA, Paul Garrett of Dial, GA, and Tim (Pam) Garrett of Dial, GA; a brother, Paul J. Rodgers, Jr. of Temonton, UT; grandchildren, Angel (Chris) Graham, Shannon (Brian) Orr, Chad (Hollis) Bowers, Kim (Keith) Hyatt, Nancy (John) Hogan, and Kayla (Ray) Mull; 11 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at 4:00 PM from the Akins-Cobb Blue Ridge Chapel with Rev. Tim Garrett and Rev. Claude Mathis officiating. Music will be provided by Kayla Mull, Ruth and Terry Bramlett and Matthew Scoggins. Interment will follow in the Salem #1 (Sugar Hill) Baptist Church Cemetery with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Chad Bowers, Ray Mull, Billy Brawley, John Hogan, Chris Graham, and Keith Hyatt. Honorary pallbearers will be Garrett Bowers, Dylan Graham, and Patrick Hogan. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 3, 2026 at the funeral home from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM.
