Carl Gene Self, age 79, of Cherry Log, Georgia passed away on May 17, 2026 in Murphy, North Carolina, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on September 1, 1946 in Copperhill, Tennessee he was the son of R.B. Self and Blanche Crawford Self. Carl worked for many years at City Services in Copperhill.

Carl was a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend; and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by his father, R.B. Self; daughter, Carla Jean Shumaker; and brother, Jackie Self.

Carl is survived by his mother, Blanche Self; children, Sandy Reid (Mike), Tammy Gibbs, and Aden Self; grandchildren, Cydney (Kanon) Hemphill, Christopher Gibbs, Beth Gibbs, Caden Reid, Easton Shumaker, Kyla Shumaker, Guage Shumaker, and Danielle Shumaker; multiple great-grandchildren; siblings, Leonard Self (Jane), Steve Self, Dewey Self, Harold Self, Howard Self, and Sharon (Sydney) Jory; many nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and dear friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. from the Akins-Cobb Blue Ridge Chapel with Rev. Joey Whittenbarger officiating. Music will be provided by Sharon Jory. Interment will follow in the Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Scott Cason, Daniel Cruse, Christopher Gibbs, Caden Reid, Sydney Jory, and Tyler Jory. Honorary pallbearers will be Carl's brothers and Ed Green. The family will visit with friends at the Akins-Cobb Funerals & Cremations of Blue Ridge, Georgia on Saturday, May 23, 2026 prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
