Carl James Payne, age 89, of McCaysville, GA, passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at his home. He was born on April 7, 1933 in McCaysville to the late Bryson Payne and Mamie Milsaps Payne. Carl served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He retired from General Motors where he worked for 30 years in assembly. Carl was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed riding Doodlebug on the side by side. Carl is preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings.

Carl is survived by his grandchildren and their spouses, Karlee and Chase McHan and Luke and Tara Whitener; great-grandson, Stryker McHan; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Jeff Patterson; sister-in-law, Esta Carver; best friend, B.J. Taylor; special companion, Loretta Hedden; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at 2:00 pm from the Akins-Cobb Flue Ridge Chapel with Rev. Luke Whitener officiating. Interment followed in the New Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery with Luke Whitener, Clay Whitener, Wesley Whitener, Steve Hedden, Todd Pack, and B.J. Taylor serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Terry Hedden, Al Dillard, and Stryker McHan.
