Mr. Bernard "Bernie" Ganues born September 25, 1923 in Talking Rock, GA, the eighth child of L.C. and Minnie Mann Ganues went home to heaven on January 20, 2011 in Maryville, TN.After relocating in Toledo, OH he opened and operated "Bernie's" Market, a north Toledo Grocer for over thirty years with his beloved wife Ruth. During that time he sponsored and managed many championship baseball and basketball teams. The culmination of these endeavors led him to be honored as the American Amateur Baseball Congress Sponsor of the Year in 1980 and was presented with the award at the winter meeting of the Major League Baseball.Not satisfied to sit around after retirement he managed the Lakeland Sportsman Club for many years and discovered a true love of trap shooting.Left to cherish his memories are his wife of sixty four years Ruth Thurman Ganues; son, Mike (Jen); daughters, Becky (Roger) Goranson and Debbie (Kurt) Stankey; grandchildren, Chad (Beth), Kevin (Carrie), Kelly (fiance Karl), Kyle(finacee Lindsey), Amanda (Bob) Foeller, Abby Wilson, Erin Stankey and Alex Stankey; three great grandchildren, Bradley Bernard Ganues, Connor Michael Ganues, Brian Daniel Earl; sister, Billie Davis; brothers, Jack and Fred Ganues; brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Max and Joyce Thurman and Jack and Jean Thurman; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.Funeral Services will be conducted on Monday January 23, at 11:00 a.m. from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Randall Ganues officiating. Music will be provided by Barbara Branton. Interment will follow in the Barnes Chapel Cemetery with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Kevin Ganues, Kyle Ganues, Chad Ganues, Delmar Branton, Kenneth Ganues and Alex Stankey. Serving as an honorary pallbearer will be A. Fred Ganues. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cass Road Baptist Church at 1400 Cass Rd. Maumee, OH 43537-2718. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 4-8 p.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.akinsfuneralhome.com.
