Alma Newman Phelps, age 83, of Farner, TN passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the Sacred Journey Hospice in McDonough, GA. Mrs. Phelps was born in Cherokee County, NC to the late Willis Fulton and Charlotte Gibson Newman. She was a homemaker and a Graduate of Hiawassee Dam High School. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Phelps.She is survived by son Rex and wife, Sheila Phelps of Athens, TN; daughters, Carolyn and husband, Clark Runion of Locust Grove, GA, Connie and husband, Therrell Goswick of Calhoun, GA, Jan and husband Wayne Robbins of Ashland, AL; brother, Calvin Newman of Farner, TN; sisters, Debbie Adams and Mary Jo Payne, both of Farner, TN, Christine Massey of KY, Hattie Lois Maney of Jackson, SC, and Barbara Lewis of Griffin, GA; nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren.Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 23, at 3:00 PM from the Akins of Copperhill Chapel with Rev. Paul Adams officiating. Music was by Janice Reid. Pallbearers included Bill Newman, Dale Payne, Gary Payne, L.D. Payne, Tommy Adams and Kim Maney. Interment followed in the New Zion cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Phelps may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942 or to the New Zion Baptist Church cemetery fund c/o Steve Adams, Farner, TN 37333.
